In our California studios, we hand-dye our marbled pillows in small batches using the traditional technique of floating paint on water. For each pillow, paint is carefully placed drop by drop onto a liquid “size” (water mixed with carrageenan, a seaweed derivative). With a bit of guidance, the color freely moves and swirls on the surface to form a pattern. When we lay our organic cotton fabric on top of the liquid size, the pattern transfers to the fabric. No two prints are ever exactly the same.
